Christchurch's Winter Challenges

Reflecting on recent productions, regional incentives, and passion projects as the industry quietens.

As I water-blast the mud off my truck after a job for the third time this month, I can (un)comfortably say that Winter is here.

As the warm weather finishes, so does our little run of long-form jobs for the region. Up the Hill wrapped a few days ago, and the regional incentive is having its last round of applications before the fund is exhausted. But its impact has been significant. It has raised the region's profile within the industry and brought some pretty awesome crew in from around the country. All signs are looking good for a repeat and possibly even an expansion. Canterbury with a regular slate of long-form projects? Is this the new normal? One can only hope.

Commercial seems to be ticking over as it does. Nice to see the same old faces around the traps. But when things get quieter, idle brains start to tick, and the odd passion project bubbles to the surface, which is always a good time. If you’re thinking, “gosh, maybe this winter I’ll actually go and shoot that,” do it. And if a mate comes to you and says, “hey, so I’ve got this project...,” do it. These are the fun ones, and it’s always good to keep your eye in or experiment with new skills.

Right. My fingers are too cold from this water-blasting. Time to go warm them up in front of an HMI or something.

Stay warm, and catch you on set,

Zac
