From 1 July 2026, the Auckland Film Protocol 2019 will be replaced by the new Screen Auckland Protocol.

The updated protocol will be maintained by Screen Auckland as an operational document, allowing it to respond more flexibly to industry needs and help make filming across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland more accessible.

The changes will affect how productions plan and apply for future shoots.

The Short Version:
  • Ultra Low Impact category - NEW!
Up to seven people, handheld only.
  • Impact thresholds have been realigned
Low Impact has been expanded to 15 people, with a small gear stash allowed. Medium Impact is capped at two temporary structures, such as ez-ups. Truck numbers are now formally defined across all levels to encompass unit bases.
  • Film licences - NEW!
Available for sole operators from 1 July: one licence, with no individual permits required per location.
  • Drone requirements
Requirements are now tiered by weight and aligned with Civil Aviation Authority rules.
  • Fees
The annual update includes a structural change: unit bases are now priced per impact tier, with bump-ins and bump-outs priced as half-day fees.

Screen practitioners planning shoots in Auckland are encouraged to review the new protocol before submitting their next application.
