Billable Travel Time: Out-of-Zone Travel and Remote Parking
Travel Time is a complex topic with multiple rules and exceptions under the Blue Book. This guide outlines two situations where travel may become billable production time: out-of-zone travel required by production and remote parking arrangements.
Out-of-Zone & Production-Required Travel
Travel may be billable when all of the following apply:
- The job is outside the Travel Zone, and
- Travel occurs before call or after wrap, and
- The travel is required by production
When these conditions are met, travel is considered production travel rather than normal commuting.
Travel is charged from the edge of the Travel Zone and rounded up to the nearest 15 minutes.
Remote Parking (Any Location)
Remote parking arrangements may also trigger billable travel time.
This may apply when:
- Production cannot secure parking near set, and
- Crew must park more than 500 metres away, or
- Crew must walk, wait, or use a shuttle to reach unit base or set, or
- Walking, waiting, or shuttle time exceeds 10 minutes, or
- Multiple walks or shuttles add up to more than 10 minutes total
What Can Be Charged
When the conditions above are met:
- Time over 10 minutes is billable
- Time is added daily and rounded to the nearest 15 minutes
- Meal breaks are excluded
Travel Time includes multiple clauses and conditions. For full details, refer to the Travel section of the Blue Book.
