Sky TV to Acquire TV Three, Newshub, and More for Just $1
In a major shake-up of New Zealand’s broadcasting landscape, Sky TV has announced it will acquire the free-to-air television assets of Warner Bros. Discovery NZ — including TV Three, ThreeNow, Bravo, Eden, HGTV, and Newshub — for just NZ$1.
Yes, you read that right: the entire acquisition is being made for a symbolic $1, on a cash-free, debt-free basis. This reflects Warner Bros. Discovery’s strategic decision to exit New Zealand’s free-to-air market, and Sky’s interest in expanding its content reach across both subscription and free-to-air platforms.
What’s Included in the Sale
The deal covers:
- TV Three – one of NZ’s leading free-to-air networks
- ThreeNow – the digital on-demand platform
- Newshub – national news operation (TV and digital)
- Bravo, Eden, HGTV – niche entertainment and lifestyle channels
Sky will also gain access to a five-year content supply agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery valued at approximately NZ$20 million, giving it continued access to international programming.
Sky’s Strategic Expansion
Sky CEO Sophie Moloney says the move is designed to “bring together the strengths of both businesses” and “create a more sustainable model for delivering content to New Zealanders.” Sky will now be able to offer content across subscription TV, on-demand streaming, and free-to-air platforms.
The company has signaled it remains committed to New Zealand content, although the future of Newshub — and its operational structure — remains under review pending regulatory approval.
Next Steps
The sale is subject to Commerce Commission and Overseas Investment Office approval, expected to take several months. Until then, Warner Bros. Discovery will continue operating the channels as usual.
