Evil Dead BURN - Part 4: The Completion Bond

Evil Dead BURN - Industry Leader Masterclass - with Rob Tapert and Matt Warren

(Duration: 52:01)

In the final session of the Evil Dead BURN - Industry Leader Masterclass Series, producer Rob Tapert is joined by Matt Warren of FFI to unpack the role of the completion bond and why it is so critical to getting a film financed and made.

Rob and Matt first met on the set of Freaked, when Matt was an office assistant. From there, Matt worked his way through the industry, including time as an Assistant Director, before moving into film financing and completion bonding, where he has now spent 30 years.

This session takes participants inside the process of working with a bond company - what filmmakers and producers need to understand, what a bond company looks for, and how each film presents its own set of risks, requirements and realities.

In many cases, the bank needs confirmation from the bond company before it will release funds. The reason is simple: half a movie is worth nothing. Completion is central to securing finance and fulfilling the deal.

At its core, a completion bond gives banks, financiers and distributors confidence that a film will be completed to an agreed standard, within an agreed timeframe and budget. Matt and Rob will explain “how the sausage is made”, how to get a movie bonded, and how the bond process supports a production from finance through to delivery.

A valuable session for producers, production teams, filmmakers and screen professionals wanting a clearer understanding of completion bonds, production risk and the financial structures that help make movies possible.
