FutureFrames: NZ 2026 Launches Short Films. Big Shifts
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way film and television content can be created, from script development and visual effects through to editing, sound and music. For many practitioners, the speed of change can feel daunting. FutureFrames:NZ aims to turn that uncertainty into opportunity by providing a supportive environment where filmmakers can experiment with AI tools, learn from industry experts, and discuss the ethical and creative implications of this evolving technology.
This year’s competition expands nationwide and is supported by the New Zealand Film Commission and NZ On Air, highlighting the importance of ensuring Aotearoa New Zealand's screen sector remains at the forefront of global innovation.
Open to filmmakers at any stage of their career, teams will work to create a 1–5 minute short film using a hybrid approach that may include AI-generated elements alongside traditional filmmaking techniques such as live action, animation and sound design. Teams will have four weeks to develop their film, supported by industry mentorship along the way.
A major feature of FutureFrames:NZ is the free online industry-led workshop series, designed to help participants build practical skills before production begins. Each 50 minute workshop will cover key areas of filmmaking in the AI era, including:
- Scriptwriting: Story Smarts & Smart Tools - Writing Short Films with AI
- Directing: Directing in the Hybrid Era - AI, Live Action & Animation
- Producing: Producing in the Hybrid Era
- Editing: Cutting Edge - Editing with AI and Traditional Tools
- Sound Design: Sonic Storytelling - Sound in the AI & Hybrid Era
- Music Design: Scoring the Story - Music with AI & Traditional Composition
The competition will culminate with ten finalist films and three winners, with prizes of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, alongside professional post-production finishing and festival submission support.
FutureFrames:NZ aims to foster collaboration across disciplines while helping the industry build confidence in using new technologies responsibly.
