Killer Sheep Return in New Black Sheeps Trailer

Twenty years after New Zealand’s killer sheep first hit the big screen, the trailer has arrived for Black Sheeps, Jonathan King’s sequel to the 2006 cult comedy-horror Black Sheep.  

The new film returns to the world of the original, following a young scientist investigating a dangerous new pathogen. Her search leads her back to a rural New Zealand town near the sheep station where the events of the first film took place.  

The sequel introduces a new ensemble of New Zealand talent, including Tabatha Killick and Joe Witkowski, while Nathan Meister reprises his role as Henry Oldfield and Oliver Driver returns as Grant.  

Behind the scenes, the production also marks a return to Wellington, where King made the original film 20 years ago. Wētā Workshop, which created the creature effects for Black Sheep, has reunited with the filmmakers to create a new generation of practical creature FX for the sequel.  

King says the collaboration allowed the team to revisit designs including the Weresheep using technology that was not available when the original film was made. The production also brought together Wellington practical effects artists working across physical gore effects, miniatures and stop motion, alongside more than 400 VFX shots.  

Black Sheep marked King’s feature directing debut in 2006 and went on to become a cult favourite, combining creature effects, horror and distinctly New Zealand humour.

Black Sheeps is written by Jonathan King, Matthew Grainger and Rosie Howells, and produced by King and Grainger alongside Terror-Fi’s James Partridge. The film was made with support from the New Zealand Film Commission.

The film will have its world premiere at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain in October, followed by its New Zealand premiere at the Terror-Fi Film Festival, screening in Wellington on 24 October and Auckland on 28 October.  

Black Sheeps opens in cinemas across Aotearoa on 12 November 2026.
