We Stand With Screen Workers - And We Stand Behind SIWA

The Screen Guild fully supports the Screen Industry Workers Act and the pursuit of collective contracts for fair minimum working conditions. We have been working on this since 2017 - and coordinating with other worker organisations - to help bring this legislation and its framework to life.

SIWA represents a historic shift in the screen sector. For the first time, it gives legal rights to collectively bargain for screen contractors - rights that have been denied to contractors within our sector for far too long. They have been built through good faith, trust, consultation, and negotiation across all sector organisations with common and shared purpose.

Given the current climate in the screen sector this kind of coordinated effort is more important than ever. It requires care, strategy, and unity across all corners of the workforce. Even when different parts of our sector see issues otherwise, we must treat each other with respect, act in good faith, and work productively to find solutions to steer us all in a positive direction.

While our work to initiate collective bargaining may not always be public, it has been constant - and always rooted in solidarity with the screen workers that our organisation represents. Our unwavering expectation is that SPADA will promptly honour their 2021 commitment to SIWA registration so that our sector can move forward with certainty.

We remain firmly committed to building a fairer, more secure future for production technicians and all screen workers - and we fully support SIWA as a crucial step in that direction.

Head to the Screen Guild Website and view our SIWA page.

Read on below about the Creative Power Workshops - ALL screen workers are welcome and encouraged to attend to gain a better understanding of SIWA.

Creative Power Workshops

Free workshop for Writers, Directors, Editors, Performers, and Screen Production Workers – unpack SIWA, get contract tips & demystify bargaining. Join us!

This is more than a workshop – it’s a chance to connect, learn, and be part of the movement.

The Creative Power workshop series is travelling across Aotearoa to bring together Writers, Directors, Editors and Performers to unpack the Screen Industry Workers Act (SIWA), share knowledge, and build stronger screen careers — together.

Delivered in partnership with NZWG, DEGANZ and Equity NZ, these free workshops offer the tools and insights you need to feel confident in your work and your rights.

We encourage you to attend a workshop if possible - we cannot emphasise enough the importance of us all understanding how SIWA will improve our working conditions and we ask you, our valued members, to show strong support to get this over the line.
